FAAN Resumes Cargo Revenue Collection at Lagos Airport After 15 Years

Lagos, August 2025 – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has resumed direct control of cargo revenue collection at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos—marking a major change after more than 15 years of relying on third-party handlers.

Key Highlights

FAAN has deployed officials from its Directorate of Cargo Development and Services to oversee real-time collection of cargo charges at cargo release points operated by NAHCO and SAHCO.

This move, termed a "historic milestone" by FAAN, aims to enhance accountability, close revenue leakages, and reinforce stakeholder confidence in cargo operations.

FAAN’s Director of Cargo Development and Services, Lekan Thomas, emphasised that positioning FAAN officers at cargo release points is both a revenue safeguard and a confidence-building measure.

Airport operations have already shown positive signs. Olatokubo Arewa, Airport Manager at MMIA, noted reduced revenue leakages and improved transparency.

The reform stems from a high-level meeting between FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi—highlighting the importance of inter-agency collaboration.

Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, stated that the success at Lagos will serve as a model for replication across other airports nationwide.
